Barbara Schastok, born in Frankfurt/Main, lives and works in Switzerland, Greece and Majorca. Since she was a child, observation and spending time outdoors has been very important to her. You can tell she’s very fascinated by experimentation with colours, shapes and materials from the final result on the canvas. Harmony and composition are the essentials in B. Schastok’s paintwork, as well as the complete opposite, disharmony and decomposition. The outlines of the shapes in combination with contrasts in colour and the sequences form the arc of tension in every painting. The abstract is as real as the concrete. When contemplating a painting, the observer lets his imagination flow, develops his own ideas and therefore is able to submerge into the exhibited works. Every painting lives through the human being that observes it. The artist works mainly with acrylic colours, pigments, tar, Indian ink, oil-based pencils and chalk pencils, as well as with different mixing techniques. Photography in nature inspires B. Schastok to capture her impressions later on the canvas.
